Jen & Kim connected on social media a couple of years ago and have worked together on several photography projects since.

Jen is an incredibly talented Memphis artist! She's a singer, songwriter & performer who had used her art as a form of therapy to work through some personal trauma. She needed a way to get it out and she found that through her music.

In this episode, Jen opens up about her personal experience of being sexually assaulted back in college and the pain of not being believed by the people who are supposed to protect you the most.

Kim & Jen also discuss the "me too" movement, what a real man looks like, and the importance of setting boundaries.

Jen also talks about the joy of being a mom and how growing up with an alcoholic & emotionally abusive mother has shaped her own approach to parenting.

Spoiler alert: Sometimes our parents teach us the valuable lesson of what NOT to do as a parent.

Kim & Jen also discuss all the exciting things on the horizon for Jen including writing lyrics & collaborating with other local artists.

We Can All Be Freedom Fighters with Demetria Frank - WTF013

Demetria Frank is an associate professor of Law at the Cecil Humphrey's school of Law and University of Memphis. Kim has been following Demetria on social media for a while and after seeing all of the incredible work Demetria is doing in the community to reform the criminal justice system, Kim knew she had to meet her and have her on the podcast.

In this episode, Kim & Demetria discuss the problem of mass incarceration in the United States and why Demetria is making it her mission to help reform the criminal justice system and put an end to mass incarceration. She also discusses why it is so important to start by helping the youth, which is part of the work she does with "Project MI."

Demetria is very passionate about ensuring that those who are incarcerated in this country have a voice. They have very few rights once they are incarcerated which is why it is important that they have people on the outside willing to speak for them.

"We can all be freedom fighters."

Kim & Demetria also discuss the "3 strikes" law and the impact that it's had on the prison system in America and the impact it has had on those who were incarcerated under this law. Something has to change!

Climb Every Mountain with Amy Forrest - WTF012

Kim & Amy have a rich and colorful friendship that spans about 27 years and it's so exciting for Kim to have Amy on the podcast this week!

Amy has been an avid backpacker for several years and in this episode Kim & Amy chat about getting into the wild and climbing mountains. Amy shares how she first became passionate about the outdoors and talks about her most recent adventure, hiking to the base camp of Mt. Everest.

Spoiler alert: It's not for the faint of heart!

They also discuss Amy's passion for hunting and foraging for her own food. She talks about her decision to start hunting for her own meat and what is involved in that process including the blood and guts of it.

"I believe you should be willing to look your food in the eye."

Amy is truly one bad ass women! She's an adventurer, a huntress, a gatherer and knows how to live off the land and is not afraid to do it!

Nadia and Kim met several years through Kim's work as a photographer and the two women hit if off immediately and have been friends ever since.

In the episode, Nadia tells Kim what is was like to grow up in a small Muslim community in Canada and what she misses the most about that experience.

Will You Choose Mud or Stars? with Gina Hollenbeck - WTF010

Gina Hollenbeck is a mom & lung cancer WARRIOR! Kim met Gina back in 2016 when Kim started the WARRIOR project which is a photo shoot that celebrates women that are currently battling cancer as well as those who are now in remission. Since then, the two have become friends who continue to love and support each other. In this episode, Kim and Gina chat about selling most of your belongings and moving to a new country with two young boys in tow. Gina shares the ups and downs of this experience and what she learned about herself along the way. "Be where your feet are." Gina talks about about the time leading up to her stage 4 lung cancer diagnosis and how she learned very quickly that you must be your own biggest advocate for your health.  Nobody knows your body like you do!  She also shares the ups and downs her journey since her diagnosis and how she will choose stars over mud every time. She also talks about the work she is doing to raise awareness around lung cancer and provide hope to others battling this wicked disease. Spoiler alert: Anyone with lungs can get lung cancer. Kim and Gina discuss the pressure women put on themselves to try and achieve someone else's idea of the perfect body and Gina opens up about her own struggle with anorexia which she had to face head on after she had been diagnosed with cancer. "The moment I decided that I needed some help is when cancer was eating away by body, I got down to about 103 lbs, but when I looked in the mirror all I could see was that I still had a little bit of fat on my belly. That was the turning point for me because I realized that I would never be thin enough." Gina's story is one of survival and hope! She is a brave and beautiful woman who is not afraid to be vulnerable and bare her soul. We are so grateful to her for sharing her story with us! This is our last episode of 2018 and we can't think of a sweeter note to end the year on. Happy listening and happy new year! Life is Not a Dress Rehearsal with Dianne Bevelander - WTF009

Dianne Bevelander was born and raised in South Africa and now calls The Netherlands her home. She is a professor of management education, with a focus on gender equality, at Erasmus University and she is Kim's husband's cousin. Kim met Dianne several years ago for the first while visiting the Netherlands and the connection was immediate! Dianne is an incredible woman doing groundbreaking work to level the playing field for women.

In this episode, Dianne shares what it was like growing up in South Africa and what brought her to the Netherlands. Kim & Dianne discuss the biases and other challenges that women face out in the world, specifically when it comes to women in management positions and other positions of leadership. They also discuss the difference between diversity and inclusion and the work that still needs to be done.

"Diversity is inviting you to the party and inclusion is asking you to dance. I think a lot of us now understand diversity but we are still missing the boat on inclusion."

Dianne teaches women that we all can lead and make a difference in helping to lift other women up. Women are 51% of the world's population and we can do great things together!

"All of us can make a difference. We can lead from where we are."

Dianne is also a cancer WARRIOR and has been in the fight of her life for several years now and is still fighting. She talks about about her battle with cancer and why she doesn't think of herself as sick. She also shares her feelings about life and death. Life is not a dress rehearsal so you must do all the things you want to do!

"While you are living, LIVE!"

This is a really powerful conversation with a beautiful and inspiring woman! Believe me when I tell you that we can all use a little bit of Dianne in our lives so get to listening!

Kim has known Nichole Frazier for years and what started out as a working relationship quickly grew into a strong friendship. Nichole is a mom, entrepreneur, and a Lyme disease warrior.

Since being diagnosed with Lyme disease almost a year ago, Nichole has been fighting a very painful and scary battle. in this episode, she opens up about the physical, mental, and emotional toll that this tricky disease has taken on her and her family. She also talks about what she has learned about herself through this difficult time and why being your own biggest advocate is everything!

Shawn Sandy has been a friend and inspiration to Kim for years. Shawn is a mom, entrepreneur, heavy lifter, fear facer, girl scout troop leader, and one seriously bad ass woman!

In this episode Shawn talks about the up and downs, mostly ups, of being an entrepreneur and how her experiences with too many bad sales training courses led her to start her business, The Selling Agency, where she teaches humans how to sell to other humans.

Kim & Shawn discuss the importance of being true to yourself in all things and how comparison really is the thief of joy. You can only live your own life! Shawn also opens up about one of her big insecurities and how she has come to terms with it.

"I'm a lot and I'm not for everyone and I'm ok with that but over the course of my life, sometimes that "too much" has cost me some friendships."

Shawn also talks about raising her kids to be brave & independant souls and she shares some of her experiences as girl scout troop leader, including cookie time.

Annemie Rabau has been a dear friend of Kim's for many years. She is a mom, grandma, teacher, adventurer, and a survivor.

Annemie grew up in Belgium and moved to the United States over 30 years ago and in this episode she talks about coming to America, becoming a mom, and her love for languages. We also talk about one of her big life changing adventures that included a 500+ mile walk, mostly in the rain, on the El Camino while wearing a backpack!

She also opens up about the pain & incredible sense of loss that she felt when her marriage of 34 years ended because of infidelity. She shares some of the emotional fall out that came after the divorce and how she is still working to pick up the pieces.

Chandra Carey is an associate professor at University of North Texas.

Her teaching and research focuses on mental illnesses and the recovery experiences of women of color, as well as culturally responsive service provision in rehabilitation counseling practice.  In this episode Chandra opens up about the joys and challenges of being a mom to children with disabilities and how she is dedicated to raising awareness and removing the stigmas that exist around Down Syndrome. Spoiler alert: People with Down Syndrome are not always happy. They experience all of the emotions. Kim & Chandra also discuss their views about the current political climate in our country, the "Black Lives Matter" movement, and America's painful past and why we must never forget it.  Chandra also shares some of the struggles she is up against as a black woman in America. "America has this image that we have to uphold so if we talk about the negative aspects of our history, somehow it's unpatriotic for us to have those discussions. It's not American for us to revisit what our painful history looks like but we need to revisit that painful history so that everyone is aware and we don't get back to a space like the one we're in today." Chandra recommends watching "Born this Way."
